DC Weekend

Brad was in DC for work Tuesday-Thursday, then Eleanor and I flew out to join him for a quick weekend of sightseeing.  Bennett stayed with Grandma and Grandpa in Oostburg, since he's not free to fly anymore and thank goodness we didn't take him - he would've hated how hot/humid it was and all the walking and sightseeing would've been rough.

Eleanor did great on our flight to DC - slept a little and was playful and happy the rest of the time.  We met Brad at the airport at 11am (he had to return his work rental car and switch hotels to be with us).  We learned how to ride the Metro and headed to our hotel in downtown DC.  Once we unloaded the luggage we headed out for the day!  First we stopped and got lunch from the food trucks around our hotel - there were tons of them!  We were right in downtown DC so I think lots of professionals take an outdoor lunch break.

Then we took the Metro to the National Zoo - we were really excited to see the pandas.  We weren't able to go into the panda house because one just had a baby, but we got to see two pandas in the outdoor enclosures and could watch a live video monitor of the mom and baby inside.  Seeing the pandas was cool, but after that it was hot and so much walking between enclosures!  That part we didn't like.  And Eleanor didn't nap very much or eat very well there - I think it was too hot.

After the zoo we again took the Metro and did quite a bit of walking to head to the Georgetown area for lunch at a burger place that is owned by Spike from Top Chef, called Good Stuff Eatery.  They also have a location in Chicago.  It was delicious!  After that we were all ready to head back to the hotel....Eleanor hadn't napped or nursed very well the entire day being out and about and we were all super hot and had tired legs.  Thankfully our hotel's bathroom was huge so we were able to put Eleanor's pack-n-play in there so that Brad and I didn't have to go to bed at 8pm with her. :)

Friday we spent the morning sight seeing around DC - we saw the Washington Monument and White House first.  We couldn't get inside of either, but it was neat just to see them from outside.  Everything was pretty roped off in preparation for the Pope to arrive Tuesday.

Next we headed to the Holocaust Museum, which was amazing.  Tons of people but like dead silent as people watched videos, read about, and saw photographs of that time.  Thankfully Eleanor napped during the first hour of our time here, but after that she was kind of screechy and loud so we sort of ran through the rest and then had to leave so she wouldn't take away from our guests' experience.

Our last stop before lunch was the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.  There are like 5 Smithsonian museums there, which I had no clue about, but we chose this one because it sounded the most interesting and is the most famous one.  Had we had more time and no Eleanor, I would've like to see the Museum of American History too.

For lunch we went to a local pizza place, &pizza.  It was so delicious and they make their own craft soda so we had fun trying those out too!  We decided to go back to our hotel for a break and so Eleanor could nurse well and take a decent nap.  I also napped which felt good after so much walking.  I had no idea a "vacation" to DC would include just constant walking.  And it was much hotter and more humid there than Wisconsin is right now so that made it seem worse.

That night we went to a fancy dinner place, Zaytinya, a Mediterranean place and it was so delicious!  I would highly recommend it if you're in the area.  Our waitress made great recommendations which was nice because we aren't super familiar with this type of cuisine.

After dinner we headed to see the Lincoln Memorial at night, which is something everyone recommended to us.  We also got lots of good views of the Washington Monument at night and happened to pass the World War 2 Memorial so we stopped there too.  Eleanor slept most of the time which was great because it was definitely past her bedtime.

Sunday we slept in, had breakfast in our hotel room and flew home to see the Packer game!  It was a fast but fun and exhausting weekend! :)
